No
one can visit San Diego and go away without a trip to Old Town San
Diego. Even though San Diego has several major attractions, the historic
Old Town is probably the most exhilarating and colorful.
Old Town San Diego goes back to the time of the early Spaniards in
California and is representative of its rich and vibrant history.
There is a plethora of daily shows, monthly festivals, dining, craftsmen
and a lot of lovely shops, which give it that air of celebration.
The visitors’ information center in the Old Town Esplanade will
provide you with maps, brochures and tours. The Old Town is known
as the birthplace of California because it was the site of the first
permanent Spanish settlement in 1769. Almost a hundred years later,
the State of California Department of Parks and Recreation established
Old Town State Historic Park to preserve the rich heritage of San
Diego. This park has a main plaza, exhibits, museums and living history
demonstrations.
You can get your fill of history by exploring the following historic
buildings: La Casa de Estudillo, La Casa de Bandini, La Casa de Altamirno
Pedrorena and the Mason Street School, San Diego’s first one
room schoolhouse.
If you go up the hill from Old Town San Diego Historic State Park,
there is Heritage Park where you will find many notable Victorian
homes of San Diego, which have been relocated and restored. Take a
short stroll down San Diego Avenue and you will see Whaley House,
one of two certified haunted houses in California. Moreover, do not
miss the Little Adobe Chapel on Conde Street, the first Church in
Old Town San Diego and El Campo Santo on San Diego Avenue.
