The
Imperial Beach Sandcastle Competition is the largest sandcastle building
competition in the United States. This festival encompasses a full
weekend including a street festival, live music and entertainment.
All events are free to the public, except for the Sandcastle Ball.
The 25th Annual
US Open Sandcastle Competition was held in Imperial Beach in July
2005. Master and amateur sand carving teams from throughout the U.S.
and Canada competed for more than $21,000 in cash prizes.
On Saturday, the
street festival began at 7:00 a.m. with a pancake breakfast at the
Beach, while over 140 vendors set up for the weekend activities. The
Sandcastle Parade started at 10:00 a.m. and the day continued with
entertainment, food, children's rides, arts and crafts and lots of
fun.Visitors and locals strolled up and down Seacoast Drive, which
was closed to traffic.
The musical entertainment
encompassed two stages and a variety of musical talent. Saturday concluded
with a spectacular Fireworks display.
On
Sunday, trained representatives for the US Open Sandcastle Competition
judged all categories. The weekend festivities concluded with the
Master's Champion Title award ceremony.
