The Imperial Beach Sandcastle Competition is the largest sandcastle building competition in the United States. This festival encompasses a full weekend including a street festival, live music and entertainment. All events are free to the public, except for the Sandcastle Ball.

The 25th Annual US Open Sandcastle Competition was held in Imperial Beach in July 2005. Master and amateur sand carving teams from throughout the U.S. and Canada competed for more than $21,000 in cash prizes.

On Saturday, the street festival began at 7:00 a.m. with a pancake breakfast at the Beach, while over 140 vendors set up for the weekend activities. The Sandcastle Parade started at 10:00 a.m. and the day continued with entertainment, food, children's rides, arts and crafts and lots of fun.Visitors and locals strolled up and down Seacoast Drive, which was closed to traffic.

The musical entertainment encompassed two stages and a variety of musical talent. Saturday concluded with a spectacular Fireworks display.

On Sunday, trained representatives for the US Open Sandcastle Competition judged all categories. The weekend festivities concluded with the Master's Champion Title award ceremony.
