Did
you know that Del Mar is the only town in the county with a world-class
thoroughbred horseracing track? The Del Mar racetrack has been drawing
horse racing fans from 1937. Spread over 350 acres, the Del Mar Racetrack
was built and sponsored by Bing Crosby, Pat O’Brien and Paramount
Studios.
It
all began in 1937 when Bing Crosby, a horse enthusiast and local ranch
owner approached the Del Mar Fairgrounds to discuss making a grandstand
– after which it went on to become the world’s most famous
race tracks entertaining some big names in showbiz like Ava Gardner,
Mickey Rooney, Douglas Fairbanks, etc.
The Del Mar Horse Park
The Del Mar Horse Park is an equestrian facility that complements
the Del Mar Fairgrounds. It provides horse owners and trainers with
an off-site venue for training, showing and stabling their horses.
If you go east of the main fairgrounds, you’ll see the 64-acre
facility which hosts events like the Olympic Show Jumping Finals.
The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club
This is where you will see the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club – which
brings us the Del Mar Horse Races. This is a 43-day racing event that
brings race enthusiasts from all over the world. The Del Mar Horse
Races ranks among the most prestigious horse racing meets in the US.
More than 2000 animals can be stabled here during the racing season
and the race facilities are the best in the country.
In 1993, a new $80 million grandstand was opened. This new grandstand
gives you a better view of the races, has more seats, and a centrally
located paddock. Every year, in the second weekend of August you’ll
see the $ 1 million Pacific Classic, which features the best horses
in the US.
