Cabrillo
National Monument established in 1913 is dedicated to the first European
expedition to the west coast of what is now the United States. Led
by Juan Cabrillo the expedition arrived in San Diego bay June 27,
1542.
The park is also home to the “old” Point Loma lighthouse.
Established November 15, 1855 and operated for 36 years before the
keeper moved to a new location closer to the tip of Point Loma.
Cabrillo National Monument is a great place to view the annual migration
of the California Gray Whale. The whales migrate past the park from
mid-December all the way through March. Mid January is the peak of
the migration.
Also you can head down to the lower end of Point Loma to explore the
Point Loma tide pools.
You can see all kinds of amazing sea life, flora and fauna unique
to the area.
